Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Makes Electoral Debut with Lok Sabha Oath-Taking Ceremony
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra marked her entry into Indian parliamentary politics on November 28 by taking the oath as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha.
She was accompanied by her family, including her mother Sonia Gandhi, brother Rahul Gandhi, husband Robert Vadra, and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. Her swearing-in, alongside Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan, who won from Nanded, is a significant milestone for the Congress party.
Priyanka’s electoral debut comes after her victory in the Wayanad bypolls, securing the seat previously held by her brother Rahul Gandhi.
This moment is historic, as for the first time in decades, all three prominent members of the Nehru-Gandhi family—Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka—are now part of Parliament.
The By-Election That Paved the Way
Priyanka Gandhi contested the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat under the United Democratic Front (UDF) banner. The seat became vacant after Rahul Gandhi, who had won from both Wayanad and Rae Bareli in the 2024 general elections, chose to retain the family bastion of Rae Bareli.
Priyanka’s victory in Wayanad came with a margin of 4,10,931 votes, surpassing her brother’s earlier lead of 3,64,422 votes in the constituency.
Despite a lower voter turnout compared to the general elections, Priyanka secured 6,22,338 votes against Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Sathyan Mokeri and BJP’s Navya Haridas. Her decisive win reaffirmed Wayanad’s status as a Congress stronghold.
A Symbolic Swearing-In
During her oath-taking ceremony, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wore a traditional Kerala Kasavu saree, symbolizing her connection to the region she now represents.
Holding a copy of the Constitution, she pledged to uphold her responsibilities in the Lok Sabha. Her brother Rahul Gandhi, who is also the Leader of Opposition, and her mother Sonia Gandhi, now a Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan, were present to witness the occasion.
Priyanka’s victory and subsequent swearing-in mark a new chapter for the Congress party. Her entry into Parliament adds another layer of dynamism to the party’s leadership and brings hope for a resurgence of the Congress in the southern states.
The Nehru-Gandhi Legacy in Parliament
The return of the Gandhi family to Parliament as a united front signifies a revival of the Congress’s traditional leadership.
While Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi will represent the party in the Lok Sabha, Sonia Gandhi’s presence in the Rajya Sabha ensures continuity of the family’s influence.
Priyanka Gandhi’s electoral debut comes after years of active involvement in Congress’s organizational activities.
In her victory speech, she expressed gratitude to her constituents, stating, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the trust you have placed in me. I will make sure that over time, you truly feel this victory has been your victory and the person you chose to represent you understands your hopes and dreams and fights for you as one of your own. I look forward to being your voice in Parliament.”
Other Key Developments in the By-Elections
Apart from Priyanka Gandhi’s win, Congress leader Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan emerged victorious in the Nanded Lok Sabha bypoll. Chavan’s victory follows the passing of the previous Congress MP, Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.
Securing 5,86,788 votes, Ravindra Chavan’s win further strengthened the Congress’s position in Maharashtra.
Challenges and Triumphs
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry into electoral politics has been met with both celebration and criticism. While her family and supporters hailed her victory, the BJP took a dig at her.
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya tweeted, “New Muslim League MP from Wayanad takes oath. Epoch moment for the Gandhi family.”
Despite such comments, Priyanka’s electoral debut is seen as a strategic move by the Congress. Her involvement in the 2024 general elections and the party’s alliance with the INDIA bloc played a crucial role in countering the BJP’s dominance in Uttar Pradesh and other states.
Under her leadership, the Congress and its allies secured 43 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, ensuring the BJP did not reach the majority mark.
A Promising Future in Politics
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s maiden victory and her entry into the Lok Sabha signify a fresh start for the Congress party. Her active role in steering the party during the 2024 elections, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, demonstrates her political acumen and commitment to the party’s revival.
With her presence in Parliament, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra aims to bring the voice of her constituents to the forefront.
Her win in Wayanad is not just a personal milestone but also a testament to the enduring legacy of the Nehru-Gandhi family in Indian politics.
