Hemant Soren, Jharkhand’s youngest Chief Minister, has carved a distinctive political journey characterized by challenges, resilience, and unwavering commitment to tribal rights.
At 49, Soren has emerged as a powerful advocate for marginalized communities, navigating through political upheavals, personal loss, and relentless opposition.
A Transformative Political Journey
Born on August 10, 1975, in Nemra village near Hazaribag, Hemant Soren’s early years were deeply influenced by his father, Shibu Soren, the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
Despite his father’s political stature, Hemant was not the initial heir. Following the untimely death of his elder brother, Durga Soren, in 2009, Hemant stepped into the political arena, assuming leadership under challenging circumstances.
Soren’s education saw him complete intermediate studies at Patna High School before enrolling at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi, where he eventually dropped out.
His formal political career began in 2009 as a Rajya Sabha member, but he soon resigned in 2010 to serve as Deputy Chief Minister in the BJP-led Arjun Munda government. The alliance’s collapse in 2012 led to President’s Rule, but Soren’s resolve to lead Jharkhand remained steadfast.
In 2013, Soren became Jharkhand’s youngest Chief Minister at 38, with support from Congress and the RJD.
Though his tenure was brief, his commitment to tribal rights and governance was evident, paving the way for his political comeback.
Fighting for Tribal Rights
Soren’s career gained momentum in 2016 during his campaign against the BJP-led government’s attempts to amend the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act and the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act.
His movement to safeguard tribal rights garnered significant support, strengthening his political influence. This advocacy was instrumental in his party’s success during the 2019 elections, where the JMM secured 30 seats—its highest tally in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly.
As Chief Minister, Soren launched initiatives like the ‘Apke Adhikar, Apki Sarkar, Apke Dwar’ scheme, which brought government services to citizens’ doorsteps.
Social welfare schemes such as the Mukhyamantri Maiyan Samman Yojana, providing financial aid to women aged 18-51, and farmer loan waivers benefiting over 1.75 lakh farmers, underscored his administration’s commitment to upliftment.
Moreover, his government’s move to waive electricity bills and provide free power for up to 200 units became hallmarks of his tenure.
Navigating Legal and Political Challenges
Soren’s tenure has not been without controversy. In 2023, he was embroiled in a money laundering case linked to a land scam.
Following his resignation on January 31, he was arrested and spent nearly five months in jail before being granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court, which found no likelihood of him committing the offense.
Soren maintained that his arrest was politically motivated, a tactic aimed at destabilizing his government.
Despite these hurdles, Soren’s leadership persisted. He continued to champion tribal welfare while addressing systemic inequalities.
His government waived electricity bills and raised the issue of unpaid coal mining dues worth ₹1.36 lakh crore with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging exploitation of Jharkhand’s resources without adequate compensation.
Electoral Campaigns and Party Resilience
Soren’s recent electoral campaigns saw him and his wife, Kalpana, address over 200 rallies in two months. He consistently accused the BJP of attempting to destabilize his administration, branding it a “poaching master” intolerant of a tribal Chief Minister completing a full term.
In 2022, Soren narrowly avoided disqualification as an MLA due to allegations concerning a mining lease. However, his political acumen allowed him to navigate this storm and retain his position as Chief Minister.
Addressing party supporters, he would often say, “Katenge nahi, kutenge (We won’t fall; we will fight and defeat them),” countering the BJP’s narrative of “Batenge, toh katenge (Divided, we fall).”
