Devendra Fadnavis Poised to Lead Maharashtra as NDA Prepares for Swearing-In

As Maharashtra prepares for the swearing-in ceremony of its new government on December 5, the political landscape remains abuzz with discussions over the next chief minister.

Devendra Fadnavis, a seasoned leader and former chief minister, is widely seen as the frontrunner. However, final decisions and announcements are yet to be made, with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) deliberating over power-sharing agreements and leadership roles.

Ongoing Political Consultations

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar flew to Delhi on Monday, engaging in discussions with central leaders, while caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis remained in Mumbai.

Shinde and Fadnavis met with party workers and senior leaders, maintaining momentum as the state awaits confirmation of the chief minister.

An official announcement regarding the leadership is expected on December 4, just a day before the swearing-in ceremony.

Political circles remain focused on the dynamics within the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, which won a decisive victory in the recent assembly elections.

Eknath Shinde’s Health Scare

Amid political developments, Eknath Shinde briefly faced health concerns. Suffering from fever and a throat infection, Shinde was hospitalized for medical examination. He reassured the media upon discharge, stating, “badhiya hai [all good].”

Shinde’s leadership during the assembly elections has been a key talking point. Shiv Sena leader Deepak Kesarkar emphasized Shinde’s contributions, calling for recognition of his role.

“The elections were fought under his leadership, and his efforts should be acknowledged,” Kesarkar stated.

BJP Readies for Leadership Announcement

A crucial meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs is scheduled for December 4 at Vidhan Bhawan in Mumbai.

The meeting, overseen by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, will finalize the leader of the state legislature party.

While the BJP has refrained from making a formal announcement, Devendra Fadnavis is widely expected to take the top post. A seasoned politician with two previous terms as Maharashtra’s chief minister, Fadnavis has remained a central figure in the BJP’s state strategy.

The swearing-in ceremony is set to take place at Azad Maidan, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior leaders of the NDA in attendance.

Speculation Over Deputy CM Posts

The Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, is engaged in power-sharing discussions. It is expected that the Shiv Sena and NCP will receive deputy chief minister positions in the new government.

Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde dismissed rumors about his possible appointment as deputy chief minister. “I have no desire for a position of power,” he clarified in a post on X, emphasizing his focus on party organization and development work.

The Shiv Sena has also expressed interest in securing the influential Home portfolio, reflecting ongoing negotiations within the alliance. Caretaker CM Shinde stated that decisions would be made collectively, ensuring consensus among the allies.

Mahayuti’s Election Victory

The Mahayuti alliance secured a decisive win in the Maharashtra assembly elections held on November 20. Out of 288 seats, the coalition won 230, with the BJP emerging as the largest party with 132 seats. The Shiv Sena followed with 57 seats, and the NCP secured 41.

The alliance’s victory underscored its strong position in Maharashtra’s political landscape.

Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, a senior BJP leader, emphasized the unity within the coalition, describing recent discussions with Eknath Shinde as “cordial and forward-looking.”
