Noida International Airport Conducts First Flight Validation Test Ahead of 2025 Launch
On December 9, 2024, Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) successfully conducted its first flight validation test at the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar.
This significant milestone paves the way for commercial operations, scheduled to begin in April 2025.
An IndiGo aircraft took off from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) and landed at Jewar for a technical assessment.
Officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Civil Aviation Ministry, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and Uttar Pradesh Civil Aviation Department supervised the operation, including senior IAS officer SP Goyal.
Data Collection and Validation Process
During the test, the aircraft remained airborne above the Noida International Airport for approximately 1.5 hours. The collected data, critical for ensuring the airport’s readiness to handle passenger services, will be submitted to the DGCA for review.
“This data will be critical for flight validation and a key step in ensuring the airport’s readiness to handle passenger services,” said Shailendra Bhatia, NIAL’s nodal officer.
The validation test included a full assessment of the airport’s 3.9-kilometer operational runway. Authorities examined runway performance, airspace coordination, communication protocols, and emergency response readiness.
The validation process is expected to conclude by December 15, after which the airport will apply for an aerodrome license, a crucial requirement for commercial operations.
Advanced Infrastructure and Near-Completion Status
The Noida International Airport, developed by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich International AG, is over 85% complete in its first phase.
The terminal building is nearing completion, and equipment installations will soon follow.
The airport boasts a 38-meter-tall Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, fully constructed and equipped with advanced communication systems.
Spanning 1,344 hectares, the airport is being developed in four phases with a total investment of ₹29,650 crore. The first phase, costing ₹10,056 crore, is designed to handle 12 million passengers annually.
Security Trials and Upcoming Operations
All security-related trials have been completed, with the successful landing of the IndiGo test flight marking a significant achievement. The DGCA approved the test flight’s landing following extensive safety checks.
The flight, carrying only crew members, took off from IGIA and reached Jewar Airport within minutes before undergoing safety inspections.
Officials stated that if the trial is deemed successful, the airport will commence commercial flight operations by April 2025.
The inaugural phase will include 60 domestic flights connecting major cities like Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Varanasi, and Mumbai. International routes to Zurich, Singapore, and Dubai, along with two dedicated cargo services, are also in the pipeline.

The airport’s architectural design draws inspiration from India’s rich cultural heritage. The staircases mimic the ghats of Banaras, while the roof design symbolizes the waves of the Ganga River.
Courtyards reminiscent of traditional Indian havelis ensure natural ventilation, while intricately designed lattice windows enhance the structure’s aesthetic appeal.
The terminal’s interior blends tradition with modernity, featuring elegant waiting rooms and spacious windows. Additionally, a five-star hotel is under construction on the premises to provide passengers with luxurious amenities.

The Noida International Airport is set to significantly ease travel congestion at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
It is expected to reduce traffic on Delhi roads, providing a convenient alternative for passengers from Noida, Greater Noida, and nearby areas.
